FREE Metrocards for 2010 Census

Free Metro Cards Last Friday, March 19 I was personally invited to attend The US Census bureau news conference at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. In attendance were the New York Immigration of Coalition, New City Comptroller John Lui and the northeast regional office of the U.S. Census Bureau. The conference covered the importance of the U.S .Census such as gaining funding for your state. This will help to determine the increase in employment, fund schools and hospitals. The conference provided a Census Timeline of operations: Here are a few dates March 27 Jackson heights 2010 census kickoff event first 100 families that show up receives free metro cards (amount was not indicated) April 1 second mailing of Census survey will be arriving for those people who haven't mailed their form back May 1 Census workers will visit households that still have not mailed their surveys back One important concern the panel addressed at the conference was the privacy of the census survey. They assured that all information provided is strictly confidential. My question was then why do they need of the telephone numbers of each household? If it is confidential "why is this needed?" The Census survey is asking for the head of each household to record all members in the home including illegal immigrants. I can see why people may be hesitating to fill these surveys out. Who wants to risk being deported? More events are to come soon in the coming months. I will keep you posted.
